About this Talk

This presentation will share strategies to support several components of comprehensive emergent literacy specifically tailored for individuals with Rett syndrome.

Shared reading will cover interactive reading, supporting language learning (including AAC, print referencing, text-to-self connections) and more.

The section on independent writing with the alphabet will focus on ensuring that each learner has access to writing with the full alphabet, including the use of ‘alternative pencils.’ We will cover generative writing with the alphabet plus feedback from adults.

The section on shared writing will focus on using poetry to engage learners in creating a shared focus.

For each of these components, we will discuss how to integrate augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and how to accommodate for cortical visual impairment (CVI). Student work and creative teaching supports will be shared throughout the session.

This presentation will be 90 minutes and will be available to watch as a replay until 20th December 2020.
